LEXINGTON, KY. - A colt by Malibu Moon, the first foal out of the stakes-winning Out of Place mare Meditations, brought $300,000 to lead all horses sold on Sunday during the Keeneland September yearling sale. The colt was purchased by Marc Keller, with Nicoma Sales acting as agent. The consignor was Taylor Made Sales Agency, which sold 42 horses on Sunday for total sales of $3,451,000, leading all consignors. The colt’s dam, Meditations, won a $60,000 stakes at Calder Race Course as part of her two wins in four lifetime starts. Malibu Moon is a 13-year-old stallion by A.P. Indy. In total on Sunday, the 284 horses sold brought total receipts of $16,636,500, for an average of $58,579. Median for the day was $50,000. The Sunday selling kicked off Week 2 of the 14-day auction, which was reformatted this year, making comparisons difficult on a day-to-day basis with last year’s results. Selling will continue until next Sunday. Last year for the seventh session, 277 horses sold for a total of $11,091,800 and an average of $40,043. Median was $27,000. Though Sunday’s results were a sharp uptick compared to last year’s seventh session numbers, the sales catalog is smaller this year, and the catalog’s premium horses were sold in split sessions this year, compared to one session last year. Cumulatively, over the first seven days of selling, total receipts from 1,225 horses sold has been $158,624,000. Average has been $129,489, and median has been $80,000. Through the first seven sessions last year – at a time when bloodstock prices were plummeting – consignors at Keeneland had sold 1,473 horses for gross receipts of $162,033,800. Average was $110,00, and median was $65,000.
