Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet again showed its quality at the top levels of the sport in 2023, finishing second to fellow finalist Godolphin by both Grade 1 wins and overall graded stakes wins in North America. Stonestreet bred and raised Goodnight Olive, who is a favorite to repeat as Eclipse Award champion female sprinter. The mare scored a repeat victory in the PNC Bank Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita to line herself up for the honor. Banke also found herself in the winner’s circle with additional Grade 1 winners this season. Stonestreet campaigned homebred Clairiere, an Eclipse Award finalist for older dirt female who added two more Grade 1 wins to her résumé in the Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn Park and Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park. Stonestreet also bred, raised, and sold the young Prince of Monaco – and then, as Banke often does with colts, bought back in for a share. The colt won the Grade 1 Runhappy Del Mar Futurity for a nine-pronged partnership. :: Full list of 2023 Eclipse Awards finalists, including profile stories Two-time Horse of the Year Curlin was a former Stonestreet colorbearer, and the breeding program continues to support the perennial leading sire, with his Grade 1 winners this year including Clairiere. In addition to Curlin, who became the Breeders’ Cup’s leading sire by wins in 2023, several other Stonestreet colorbearers are prominent Kentucky stallions, including homebred Good Magic, a son of Curlin who sired Kentucky Derby winner Mage in his first crop. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
