VAUGHAN, Ontario – Queen’s Plate winner Moira was crowned Canadian Horse of the Year and Mark Casse won his 12th straight outstanding trainer award at the 2022 Sovereign Awards ceremony Thursday at the Universal Eventspace. Moira captured the Fury Stakes and Woodbine Oaks before an impressive seven-length score over males in the $1 million Plate, in which she shattered Woodbine’s 1 1/4-mile synthetic-track record. She outpointed Lady Speightspeare by a margin of 103-75 in Horse of the Year voting. Moira also was named champion 3-year-old filly in a landslide over Souper Hoity Toity (134-53). Lady Speightspeare captured two Sovereign Awards – champion female turf horse and champion older main-track female. She was unbeaten in three Woodbine outings, a trio of graded stakes on turf and the Tapeta. The now-retired 5-year-old capped her 2022 campaign with a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Keeneland, while leaving Moira behind her in fifth. In the female turf category, Lady Speightspeare won by a margin of 120-36 over Fev Rover, who beat out Moira for second. She was an equally easy winner for older main-track female, outpointing Infinite Patience 117-51. Casse edged out Moira’s trainer, Kevin Attard, by a margin of 105-102 in the voting. Casse has won the outstanding trainer award an astounding 15 times. Casse’s Woodbine stable star, Filo Di Arianna, was voted both champion male turf horse and champion male sprinter, while also finishing a distant third in the Horse of the Year voting. He beat out Philip My Dear by a margin of 124-41 for male turf honors, and bested Arzak 98-49 in the male sprinter category. Casse also trained Sir for Sure, who won for champion male 3-year-old by a margin of 109-48 over Ironstone; and Who’s the Star, who garnered champion older main-track male honors 136-30 over War Bomber. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  In one of the stronger categories, Hazelbrook (110) prevailed for champion female sprinter over Our Flash Drive (43) and Lady Speightspeare (27). The Attard-trained Philip My Dear was a decisive winner for champion male 2-year-old, 112-60 over Poulin in O T. Cairo Consort beat out Last Call 118-72 for champion 2-year-old filly. War Bomber’s owner, Bruno Schickedanz, notched his first Sovereign for outstanding owner. He beat out Moira’s partnership of X-Men Racing, Madaket Stables, and SF Racing, 59-52. Kazushi Kimura won his second consecutive outstanding jockey award, 123-83, over Rafael Hernandez. Coming off a successful winter stint at Santa Anita, Kimura was Woodbine’s leading rider in 2022 and 2021. Woodbine’s top apprentice, Slade Jones, was a runaway winner for outstanding apprentice, 140-56 over N’Rico Prescod. In the tightest vote of the evening, Moira’s breeder, Adena Springs, beat out Sam-Son Farm 94-93 for outstanding breeder. It was the 13th win in the category for Adena Springs and owner Frank Stronach. Count to Three, the dam of Grade 1 winners Ransom the Moon and Count Again, was named outstanding broodmare. Daily Racing Form freelancer Julie Wright won for outstanding photograph in a tie with Allan De La Plante. Wright’s stunning photo was of Rougir after her victory in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes. Woodbine Entertainment took the outstanding audio visual/digital broadcast award, and George Williams won for outstanding writing. Long-time Alberta trainer Dale Saunders was bestowed the E.P. Taylor Award of Merit. Selected unanimously by the Jockey Club of Canada’s stewards, it is a lifetime achievement award honoring those who have made significant contributions to the Thoroughbred industry in Canada.
