Chasing Time Not This Time – Race Hunter, by Dixie Union Bred in Kentucky by Tentane Farm ($115,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Royal Flush Racing; $250,000 OBS April 2-year-old purchase by MyRacehorse) European Horse of the Year Giant’s Causeway was multiple times a leading sire in North America. However, the late son of Storm Cat has not yet sired an American classic winner. He has two more chances from his small final crop of three, as Classic Causeway and Giant Game are both Derby hopefuls. But his legacy is playing an even bigger role on this Derby trail. Not This Time is the sire of four sons in this week’s Derby Watch Top 20, with Epicenter, recent winner of the Grade 2 Risen Star, climbing the chart and Chasing Time looking to move forward in the Grade 2 Rebel. Not This Time, a half-brother to Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner and successful young sire Liam’s Map, won the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes and was second in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile before an injury curtailed his career. He has quickly emerged as a solid young sire. With his first crop led by Grade 1 winner Princess Noor, he finished second on the 2020 freshman earnings list and led his class by individual winners. He led the 2021 second-crop sire list by earnings, and leads the third-crop list early this year. Not This Time’s 3-year-olds are led by Epicenter, who won the Gun Runner Stakes and was second in the Grade 3 Lecomte before taking the Risen Star. Also on the Derby Watch list is Simplification, who won the Mucho Macho Man and was second in the Grade 3 Holy Bull; meanwhile, Chasing Time and In Due Time are headed to stakes company off impressive allowance wins at Oaklawn and Gulfstream, respectively. Not This Time’s current crop of 3-year-olds also includes Howling Time, winner of the Street Sense at Churchill last fall, and juvenile stakes winners Ain’t Life Grand, Last Leaf, and North County. Last Leaf was third in the Grade 3 Forward Gal this month. Race Hunter won her debut sprinting on turf in England; her only win in the United States came going 6 1/2 furlongs on the synthetic at Presque Isle Downs. She is the dam of two winners from three starters. In addition to Chasing Time, she is the dam of winning sprinter Lady Anna. More stamina can be found deeper in the pedigree.
