BELMONT PARK Weather: Rain Track: Sloppy (dogs up) Temp: 68 ELMONT, N.Y. - One could use three four-letter words to best describe the training session for Belmont Stakes horses here Thursday.  Rain. Slop. Gate. Moderate overnight rain turned into a torrential downpour just about the time the track opened for training at 5:30 a.m., conditions that worsened over the next half-hour before clearing out shortly before 7:30 a.m. The main track was sloppy with the dogs stationed well out from the inside rail to protect the inner part of the strip with live racing scheduled later in the day. As a result of the weather conditions, training was limited for the most part, with five of the prospective eight Belmont Stakes starters getting in some work over the main track. The other three, including the Todd Pletcher-trained pair of Mo Donegal and Nest, headed to the training track, as they have on a regular basis all week. :: Get Belmont Stakes Day Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the clocker team to access exclusive insights from the morning workouts. Both Belmont morning-line favorite WE THE PEOPLE and Kentucky Derby winner RICH STRIKE took the opportunity to school in the starting gate this morning. We the People schooled at the tail end of a near-30-minute session on the racetrack, which kicked off with a half-mile jog followed by a one-mile gallop while kept well out in the middle of the course and under a strong hold by his rider and trainer, Rodolphe Brisset. Rich Strike did little more than jog a mile to the gate before his brief schooling session. He seemed to be on his toes, and certainly didn’t need to do much more after his eye-catching two-mile gallop 48 hours earlier. CREATIVE MINISTER, who usually goes out at 5:30, apparently had his schedule altered this morning by the heavy rain, and waited to come out after the renovation break. He appeared to have a relatively easy morning, but did get hot in the coat for a second time this week, something he had not done while training at Gulfstream Park throughout the winter. SKIPPYLONGSTOCKING also had an easy day in the slop, jogging once around the mile and one-half oval shortly before 7 a.m. He has been in maintenance mode since his arrival from Baltimore following his fifth-place finish in the Preakness. BARBER ROAD came splashing down the center of the track shortly after the heavy rain ended, around 6:30 a.m. He is not one to wow anybody in the morning, especially at a gallop, as noted prior to his sixth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He is listed to race with blinkers off in the Belmont.
