Owners and breeders Ken and Sarah Ramsey are in familiar territory as Eclipse Award finalists. Based in Nicholasville, Ky., the Ramseys are four-time Eclipse winners – three times as outstanding owner and once as outstanding breeder. They earned honors in both categories in 2013, following a breakthrough season for their homebred stallion Kitten’s Joy. Their previous owner awards came in 2004 and 2011. The Ramseys had another stellar campaign in 2014, with earnings of more than $10.4 million as owners through Dec. 16, well ahead of second-place Midwest Thoroughbreds with $5.6 million. Ramsey Farm’s imposing stable of homebreds also propelled the operation to the top spot among breeders by earnings, eclipsing $10.1 million and outpacing perennial leader Adena Springs by more than $1 million. Kitten’s Joy, a 14-year-old son of El Prado, continued to reward the Ramseys’ heavy investment, siring the bulk of the farm’s marquee runners. Among them were Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Bobby’s Kitten, Grade 1 winners Stephanie’s Kitten and Real Solution, and Big Blue Kitten, who finished second in the Grade 1 Canadian International Stakes. While runners sired by Kitten’s Joy continued to carry the flag for the Ramsey stable, the operation also saw high-level success with runners from other sires purchased at auction. The Ramseys were represented by a pair of entries in the Kentucky Derby – We Miss Artie and Vicar’s in Trouble – both graded stakes winners in 2014. The Ramseys got their 14th leading-owner title at Keeneland during the fall meet, tying them with T.A. Grissom for the most meet titles by an owner at the track. They also won or shared meet titles at Churchill Downs during the track’s September and November meets as well as Gulfstream Park’s 2013-14 championship meet.
