The Breeders' Cup World Championships attract the best Thoroughbred horses worldwide to compete in Grade 1 races for both males and females at a variety of distances on both turf and dirt. The 2024 Breeders' Cup will be held at Del Mar in California. The two-day event will be held Nov. 1 and 2, showcasing elite competition and crowning the year's Breeder's Cup winners for both turf and dirt races.

The horses that compete in these championship races can claim their berths in multiple ways. The first is by winning a Breeders' Cup Challenge race. The second is through a system that allows horses to earn points based on their performance in major races throughout the year. The third way to be selected is to be chosen by a panel of experts. There are a maximum of 14 horses in each Breeders' Cup race, except the Dirt Mile and Juvenile Turf Sprint, which are limited to 12 starters.
