Post | Horse/ Best Beyer | Trainer/ Jockey | Odds and comments by David Aragona | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Out On Bail 76-69-71 | Mike Maker Luis Saez | SCR | |||
DA: Has twice chased home the speedy Governor Sam, unable to catch rival even with the right pace setup last time. | ||||||
2 | Aesterius NA-NA-NA | Archie Watson James Doyle | 5-1 | |||
DA: Turned tables on nemesis Big Mojo to take G2 Flying Childers; has won 3 Euro stakes at 5F over straight courses. | ||||||
3 | Big Mojo NA-NA-NA | Mick Appleby Tom Marquand | 9-2 | |||
DA: Same connections as last year's winner Big Evs; 5F specialist was just edged out by Aesterius in the Flying Childers. | ||||||
5 | Arizona Blaze NA-NA-NA | Adrian Murray Umberto Rispoli | 20-1 | |||
DA: Experienced Euro invader raced well at 6F over the summer, placing in a G1, but form has plateaued as of late. | ||||||
6 | Jet Sweep Joe 46-71-77 | Paul McEntee Billy Loughane | 30-1 | |||
DA: Couldn’t deal with frenetic early pace in Indian Summer and faded badly; form going in wrong direction. | ||||||
4 | Magnum Force NA-NA-NA | Ger Lyons Colin Keane | 15-1 | |||
DA: Chased home Aesterius and Big Mojo when beaten favorite in G2 Flying Childers; all races over straight courses. | ||||||
7 | Whistlejacket NA-NA-NA | Aidan O'Brien Ryan Moore | 6-1 | |||
DA: G1 Prix Morny winner was also second in two G1 stakes at 6F; O’Brien colt is class of field if he handles slight turnback. | ||||||
8 | Ecoro Sieg NA-NA | Hideyuki Mori Christophe Lemaire | 7-2 | |||
DA: Japanese colt is 2 for 2 over 6F, but possesses blazing early speed, so cutback to 5F no issue; take him seriously. | ||||||
9 | Shareholder NA-NA-NA | Karl Burke William Buick | 10-1 | |||
DA: Won G2 Norfolk at Royal Ascot, but then bombed in G1 Prix Morny in August; tough read returning from layoff. | ||||||
10 | Governor Sam 77-75-78 | George Weaver Paco Lopez | 6-1 | |||
DA: Has won four in a row including three stakes; laid down scorching fractions and still held on to win Indian Summer. | ||||||
11 | Gate to Wire 73-65 | Todd Pletcher Irad Ortiz, Jr. | 20-1 | |||
DA: Spa debut winner was no match for stablemate Mentee in Futurity; needs to get faster to contend at this level. | ||||||
12 | Ides of March NA-NA | Aidan O'Brien Frankie Dettori | 10-1 | |||
DA: Won maiden on third appearance, then easily took down Irish G3 at 6F, but that was over two months ago. | ||||||
13 | Pali Kitten (AE) 79-58-56 | Doug O'Neill Kazushi Kimura | 20-1 | |||
DA: Took a big step forward to upset just 3 rivals in the Speakeasy; waters get much deeper for improving colt. | ||||||
14 | Smash It (AE) 78-91-83 | Todd Fincher Juan Hernandez | SCR | |||
DA: Earned a 91 Beyer in Del Mar maiden score on dirt; not quite as brilliant when beaten in the Speakeasy on turf. | ||||||

The horses that compete in these championship races can claim their berths in multiple ways. The first is by winning a Breeders' Cup Challenge race. The second is through a system that allows horses to earn points based on their performance in major races throughout the year. The third way to be selected is to be chosen by a panel of experts. There are a maximum of 14 horses in each Breeders' Cup race, except the Dirt Mile and Juvenile Turf Sprint, which are limited to 12 starters.
