LAS VEGAS - Most of us can only dream about making the kind of $500,000 score Richard Goodall made Saturday in the Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship here at the Red Rock Casino, Resort, and Spa. But for a period of about 22 hours, Dave Neuburger had more of a right than anyone else to fantasize about making just that kind of score.

David Neuburger of Forest Hill, N.Y. finished Friday as the leader in the two-day National Handicapping Championship, winning the Day 1 prize of $3,000 when he finished with a score of $150.50 from 15 mythical $2 win-and-place bets.

If it's also true of humans, then the five men who earned their Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship berths on Wednesday for this Friday and Saturday's $1 million finals have to be considered live longshots as they wheel back on short rest.
